Start an offense with the side pick-and-roll
Ponsarnau uses a side ball screen to stretch help defenders and connect the first advantage to a second action. The three players away from the screen matter as much as the two involved in it.

- Keep the screen wide enough that the ball handler can attack an open side before strong-side help arrives. The screener's continuation should suit the player's strengths: roll, short pop or three-point pop.
- Position a third player near the opposite elbow as a passing option. On a switch or show, a quick slip and this outlet can form a passing triangle.
- Against a defense that denies the middle, the handler attacks the screener's defender early. If stopped, reverse to the screener and choose a handoff or pass to the third player.
